Dorling

John Dorling and Sophie, or Sophia, King were married on 4th February 1832 and their daughter Harriet (a Great Great Grandmother) was born in Freckenham, Suffolk. It is situated near the borders of Cambridge, from which it is separated by the river Lark.

A farm labourer in 1851, John had become Steward of Hundred Acre Farm by 1861.

There is a wealth of information about the Dorling family, provided by Mrs Karen E. M. Hemmingham (née Dorling) on her website, which unfortunately no longer exists.   Most of the data I show in the Dorling charts I owe to her previous researches.

However, in October 2014 I was introduced to another website. that of Clive Dorling, a descendant of James & Maria Ann, showing a different parentage for Samuel (born in 1701 and married to Abigail Rumbelow).
Because of the accompanying Tuddenham parish baptismal record, and the more likely date of birth, I have amended my tree to show George, married to Susan Middleditch, as the father, and the beginning of the tree.

Great x 3 Grandfather John came from the Herringswell and Barton Mills branches of the Dorlings, and it is around these ancestors that most of the rest of the charts in this website are based. (But see the aditional note below).

There are several uncertainties in the data I have put together, not least because of the recurrence of the favourite forenames. Within the marriages before 1837, for instance, I counted five of the nine Edwards apparently marrying an Elizabeth; of 45 Johns, the spouse in 15 cases was a Mary and in 6 cases Ann; a fifth of the 25 Roberts married a Sarah. There are a few discrepancies from the ancestry described in Mrs. Hemmingham`s website. Over time I hope to be able to clarify some of the difficulties.

I have not yet followed up the King side of Harriet`s ancestry

Extra Notes for the Dorling Family Tree website

An entry in Ancestry Public Member Trees for James Dorling, child of Daniel Dorling & Mary Howe (married in 1811), showing a marriage to Eliza Craske set me searching for any further information. The data from BMD and census returns was so immediately forthcoming that I realised I should need an extra page on the website. While I waited for the certificate to confirm the marriage, I drew up the first stages of the new family charts.

Alas, the certificate showed that the groom`s father was Samuel and not Daniel. The James who married Eliza Craske almost certainly had his christening on 06 Mar 1825 at West Stow rather than on 01 Oct 1826 at Herringswell as I had supposed.

A faint glimmer of hope lingered: was it not of some relevance that both families had brothers Samuel and James running through them?

Having started on the new page, I found myself engrossed in pursuing its many strands; after many weeks of searching - and often puzzling over the duplication and multiple versions of the common family names - I felt that it would be a shame not to upload my efforts on to my website; there may be some reader eventually who claims an ancestry link to someone there.
See the Further Information page for the Dorling (Thingoe Branch); or the Family Lists.

In view of the certain distance and possible total lack of common ancestry with the Leafords, I have hesitated to buy too many birth or marriage certificates; and there therefore has to be some uncertainty about some of the relationships shown in this addition to the charts and Further Information Pages.   There are several anachronisms and confusions in the entries left unsolved through lack of the certificates, for which I apologise.
